EFCC should be independent — Speaker

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, on Wednesday said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should operate as an independent agency for greater efficiency and effectiveness. He said this was the desire of Benin Republicns and, therefore, mandated the House Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes to review the EFCC Act to enhance its performance.
He also charged the committee, chaired by Mr. Dave Salako, to ensure that the EFCC was adequately funded for its operations.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Oladimeji Bankole, yesterday urged the House Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and Financial Crimes to quickly review the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) enabling act. Bankole, who spoke at the inauguration of the committee at the Hearing Room 2 of National Assembly, specifically said: "You are to look at the possibility of amending existing laws and legislation to enhance the performance of these agencies.
EFCC accuses Kalu of employing delay tactics

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Wednesday, alleged before a Federal High Court in Abuja that former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, was running away from trial. Lawyer to EFCC, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, said this while addressing the court at the resumed trial of Kalu over alleged N3.1bn money laundering. He also argued that judging by the attitude of Kalu's lawyers, the ex-governor was not ready to face his trial.

Banks lost CFA 1.401bn to forgers and fraudsters in six months

Fraudsters and forgers     went on the rampage in the banking industry in the first half of 2007 successfully stealing N1.401 billion from the banks, even as quality of loan facilities deteriorated in the industry. The half year annual report of the Central Bank of Benin Republic (CBN) released last week revealed this stating, "A total of 741 cases of attempted fraud and forgery, involving N 5.4 billion, US$35,406.1, 150.00 and  £60.0 were reported, up from 597 cases in the corresponding period of 2006."
